4th Home Opens in Guatemala
On October 30, the National Office received an email bursting with the news that Esperanza Juvenil had opened its fourth home. Kristin Ostby, Director of Central American Operations, wrote: “We had a great weekend! The new scholars came with their families and are now settled in. There were some tears shed at the beginning but once the kids were busy playing games, reading, etc., everyone seemed very happy. We had a big welcome and an October birthday party Saturday night with a piñata, cake and Pictionary, which the kids loved!”
This event marks not only the new home but the tremendous progress being made on behalf of our scholars in Guatemala by Kristin, her staff and the many friends of Esperanza Juvenil, both in the U.S. and Guatemala. Opportunities recently made available to the scholars include participation in Junior Achievement, visits with local professionals and entrepreneurs, art classes, a first ever camping trip and a visit to the National Palace. Through their willingness to seize the opportunities, do well in school and support one another, these young men and women illustrate that HOPE is truly universal.
With the fourth home in operation, Esperanza Juvenil is serving 48 children in Guatemala and plans to open another home to 12 additional girls in 2007. Future plans also include development of an Educational Center that will provide services and activities to complement the scholars’ five-hour school day.
