Scholars

The Esperanza Juvenil scholars share a curiosity and interest in life and a commitment to continue their education. All come from difficult backgrounds in which they do not have families or their families can not support their education. Many have lost family members due to poor health and violence.  The scholars come from the capital, Guatemala City, and from the interior of the country.  A third of the scholars speak Spanish as a second language.  Their first languages include Tzutujil, Quiche and Kakchiquel.

Esperanza Juvenil provides these young people with the opportunity to pursue their education with the goal that they will achieve a college education, reach their maximum potential as individuals and become contributing members of their society. All of the children in the program will be the first in their families to attend university! In Guatemala, where only 3.6% of the population has some form of higher education (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), this is a great leap forward for the children, their families and entire country.

Oscar, age 10

"Esperanza Juvenil has changed who I am by giving me a home."

Lesly, age 14

"I’m going to be a hardworking person who cares about others.  I want to continue studying so in the future I can be a great psychologist, dentist or doctor."

Humberto, age 12

"I have changed my way of being, because before I wasn’t educated. Since I entered Esperanza Juvenil, I have become obedient, educated and a good student. I want to serve the world. Without this program, I don’t know how my future would be."

Eloisa, age 15

"Esperanza Juvenil is a dream come true because I have an opportunity to study --- something that I never had before I was here."
