Become a Volunteer

Why volunteer with BHGH?

Each Boys Hope Girls Hope scholar understands the program's mission and works hard to live up to its ideals - to reach their personal and academic potential and to become "men and women for others".

Our volunteers supplement the work of our program staff, providing the dedicated support needed to help these scholars leverage their academic opportunities and make the most of their talents. Because our program is residential, college preparatory and focused on the individual, it is small and offers many opportunities for volunteers to have very meaningful and direct impact.

The scholars of Boys Hope Girls Hope, like all children, will help shape the future of our community. For this reason, we believe it is important for them to interact with volunteers who can share their diverse talents and be role models for good citizenship. Your presence and expertise can help enlighten and motivate these children, making a tremendous difference in their lives.

How can you help our scholars?

Be a tutor

Our scholars come from diverse backgrounds and have equally diverse talents and interests. Tutors are always appreciated for:

  • Various academic subjects
  • Tutor in Spanish and French*
  • Organizational and leadership skills
  • Music
  • Art

*Spanish and French tutors do not necessarliy need to be fluent.

Be a mentor

Who opened the door for you? Boys Hope Girls Hope is searching for people who want to serve as mentors for our scholars and help open the door to their future.

  • Expose them to their area of career interest
  • Help them apply to college
  • Share culturally enriching experiences with them such as a visit to an art museum, an afternoon concert, or a sporting event at the local college campus.

We ask that mentors have:

  • the ability to commit to the program for one (1) year
  • the enthusiasm to spend one to two hours per week with a scholar
  • a genuine interest in our scholars and the ability to see things from their perspective
  • the desire to serve as a positive role model for our scholars.

Be a Dinner Parent

Like many families, our scholars enjoy dinner together every night. If you have a talent for cooking, please consider volunteering to cook dinner at our homes once a month. Nothing is more appreciated than a delicious home cooked meal-by both the scholars and the house parents!

Help with one of our events

Boys Hope Girls Hope of Southern California hosts three special events in every year, including our annual golf tournament. These are important fundraisers for the program as well as fun events that provide a terrific opportunity to network with other people in the community. You can learn more about our upcoming events by visiting our news and events page.

Help out in our office

The BHGH staff is very lean, and we always appreciate volunteers with organizational, grant research and administrative skills who can help in our Costa Mesa office.

If you choose to volunteer with the scholars, you must undergo a screening procedure. Each Boys Hope Girls Hope child has been entrusted to us by his/her parent/guardian. In consideration of this most important responsibility, it is essential and non-negotiable that each community volunteer be screened according to specific guidelines.

To begin the screening process, please contact Sara Spencer, Business Manager/Special Events, for more information. You will soon receive a packet including a list of volunteer opportunities and additional information.
