DETAILS OF PROGRAM

Our Model of Care (H.O.P.E.)

Many of our scholars are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment and homelessness; others come from loving families who are nevertheless unable to care for them. We see a growing number of families unable to care for their children due to abject poverty; single-parent homes impacted by terminal illness or incarceration may also result in referral to Boys Hope Girls Hope.

Through a collaboration with the National Office, the program provides

Homes: six to eight children live in neighborhood homes with qualified live-in counselors. Respect for the individual is the basic rule of all Boys Hope Girls Hope homes, where children share rooms and are expected to assist counselors with a variety of daily living tasks.

Opportunities: We strive to ensure that the school years and summers are filled with activities that allow the children to explore their interests. Where appropriate, children also receive counseling services so they are able to move beyond their troubled pasts and move on to a brighter future.

Positive Parenting: Residential counselors provide the children with support, guidance and structure in an environment where they can be a part of a nurturing family.

Education: We send our children to top-notch elementary, middle and high schools where they receive a first-class education and hone the skills needed to succeed in college. High school juniors and seniors receive individual assistance with the college selection/application process, and all scholars receive financial and emotional support through college.

The Boys Hope Girls Hope model of care is unique in its goal of meeting ALL of the scholars' needs (social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical) in a way meaningful to each scholar, and in its long-term commitment to the goal of college success.

Partners in Parenting

One of the most important aspects of Boys Hope Girls Hope is the close association of parents with the program. Parental involvement is highly valued, reaffirming the conviction that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Parental participation in the child's activities and special events within the program, as well as support of program goals and values, ensures the best possible experience for the child.

The parent or legal guardian of the Boys Hope Girls Hope youth is a partner with the program in the parenting of the child.

Parents maintain guardianship and custody of the child.

Boys Hope Girls Hope maintains regular contact with the families of children in the program through scheduled conferences and telephone contacts. The staff meets briefly with the parent before and after family visits.

Youth typically visit families according to their service plans, generally once a month and often more frequently, depending on the child's particular situation. Extended visits may occur during holidays or the summertime. There are no restrictions on contact by phone, letter or email. Special visits can be arranged outside the visiting schedule.

Parents will be informed in advance of special events and activities involving their child.

Parents are welcome to communicate with program staff any concerns regarding their child's needs or services rendered by Boys Hope Girls Hope.
