Inspire. Empower. Nurture. Succeed.
Volunteers help our scholars succeed. At Boys Hope Girls Hope San Francisco Bay Area (BHGH-SF Bay Area), our commitment is to help each scholar achieve his/her full potential—today, tomorrow and into the future. Each child is unique, with different strengths and interests, and we tailor the support we provide to meet those individual needs. But, we can’t do that without the help of our dedicated volunteers.
Why Boys Hope Girls Hope San Francisco Bay Area?
When our scholars enter the BHGHSF Bay Area program, they commit to their own personal development and to serve others in need. We have high expectations for them as students, peers, and as community citizens. Our volunteers help them achieve these goals, acting as role models, mentors, and above all, friends. Your involvement can make a tremendous difference in their lives.
How can you volunteer?
BHGH-SF Bay Area is primarily a residential college-preparatory program. It offers many opportunities for volunteers to make a meaningful and direct impact on young lives. As a volunteer, you will work with some incredibly motivated and motivating children and staff. We presently support 10 young men in residence
and two in college, and are in the process of expanding our services to include non-residential scholars and young women.
Your talents can be used to:
Tutor. We ask that tutors make a one to two hour commitment per week. While tutoring experience is not required, volunteers should be comfortable explaining concepts, reviewing homework, providing test preparation, teaching studyskills and working with flash cards.
Mentor. Mentors enrich our scholars by broadening their perspectives and helping them to manage daily challenges. In particular, mentors are needed to help our scholars explore areas of career interest, apply to college and pursue individual interests in art, music, sports and other activities. We ask each mentor to commit to spending one to two hours a week with a scholar for at least one year.
Cook. Like many families, our scholars share dinner together every night. If you have culinary talents, consider lending them to dinner preparation at the BHGH-SF Bay Area residence. You can then enjoy the fruits of your labor by sharing a home-cooked meal with our scholars and house parents.
Repair. The BHGH-SF Bay Area residence has various maintenance needs. If you are handy with tools, we can use your assistance. We also encourage groups to join in—from your office, your community or your own school. You can volunteer for one specific project (generally a four-to-eight hour commitment), or help ongoing as projects arise.
Help. BHGH-SF Bay Area hosts several important fundraising events every year, including our annual golf tournament and gala. By volunteering at one of these events, you not only help us raise critical dollars, but have the opportunity to network with business, community and academic leaders supporting our mission.
Share. BHGH-SF Bay Area staff runs very lean to ensure that the majority of dollars we raise go to support our scholars. As a result, we always appreciate volunteers with professional, organizational and administrative skills who can help in our office. Our scholars also appreciate the opportunity to learn about careers and life skills from professionals in the community.
What does it take to be a volunteer at BHGH-SF Bay Area?
First, we ask that volunteers be committed to the BHGH-SF Bay Area mission and to our scholars. Through volunteering, you become an ambassador for our program, helping us make a difference in young lives every day.
Second, we ask that you help safeguard the trust placed in BHGH-SF Bay Area by the guardians of our scholars. Therefore, we ask that our volunteers—as well as our staff members, mentors, tutors, etc.—be screened according to specific guidelines, which may include background checks, finger printing and testing for TB.
